About the J/80

The J/80 has matured to become Europe’s best selling sportsboat.

The enduring success of the boat is as a result of many factors, but relate in principal to its inspirational design and superb standard of construction.

The J/80 is an ISAF one design and as such, is entitled to hold both European and World Championships J/80s are check measured and weighed at major events, sail purchases are restricted to one suit per year and professional helmsman are not allowed to ‘parachute in’ for regattas. Racing is fair, fun and targets owner drivers.

The J/80’s high stability and built in buoyancy make it the only sportsboat with a Category B offshore classification.

The J/80 has a proper lead keel for high stability, a tough two spreader mast, a large cockpit and ‘top of the range’ jib furling system and deck gear.

Delightfully easy to sail, yet capable of 18 knots on a breezy day, the J/80 is a regular class winner at major events such as Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race.

The J/80 has a small cabin: large enough to sleep 4 on airbeds or optional cabin cushions, but more often used simply to carry a change of clothes and lunch. It means there is somewhere dry for children to play whilst cruising, and importantly, somewhere private to attend to onboard needs. Perhaps this is another reason why so many girls sail in the fleet? At most major championships this year more than 10% of the helms were female; a much higher ratio than seen in other fleets.
